Depends on what area within the investment bank that you’re interviewing for.
General tips:
— Know the culture and what the bank values, e.g. teamwork or individualism
— Read the news, and be able to discuss both current affairs as well as big deals that the bank has completed over the past year
— Know something about the major business lines and global footprint of the bank
— Dress professionally — a conservative suit is best.
— Go prepared w/ questions. They will give you time to ask some.
Specific tips:
– For investment banking, you need to know the basics of discounted cash flow analysis, financial statements, and recent transactions.
– For sales, be able to talk about markets or stocks that you’ve followed (whether you own anything or not, you need to be able to comment on how markets are doing, recommendations you’d make, etc.).
— Trading — in addition to the sales advice above, you may also want to discuss your mathematical capabilities (e.g. adding #s in your head), or some risk management strategies you’ve employed in your personal life
— Research — talk about markets you follow, papers you’ve written in school, etc.
— Operations — talk about processes you’ve improved, controls you’ve added, or leadership oriented activities you’ve done
— Controllers — use your accounting knowledge
Good luck!
